What the record is missing
353 places where the data is sound and the history has a hole in it, found by reading the model against itself rather than by anyone thinking to ask.
The questions somebody thought to ask are on their own page:
152 open questions,
and 42 that have been answered.
This is not a fault list. data/checks.py already stops the build on anything broken: a dangling id, a malformed date, a farm with no name. Everything here is well-formed and simply incomplete - eighty-one years pass on a farm with nobody on record holding it, a surveyor names a man on a boundary whose own tenure we have never written down, an estate is inventoried on ground we cannot place. None of it is a bug. All of it is an afternoon in an archive.
| check | what it looks for | open |
|---|---|---|
B1 succession | two consecutive owners with nobody in common and years between them | 17 |
B2 trail-ends | a farm we researched whose record stops and never resumes | 51 |
B3 unheld-farm | ground named again and again as a neighbour that we hold no parcel for | 28 |
B4 unheld-owner | a neighbour named as a person whose own tenure we have no record of | 12 |
B5 one-trace | somebody who touches the land once and is attached to nothing else | 6 |
B6 loose-doc | evidence about ground, a diagram, an estate, attached to no ground | 27 |
B7 no-owner | an ownership span that names nobody | 11 |
B8 never-held | a parcel nobody is on record as ever having held | 201 |
2 further breaks have been answered and are not shown: 0 promoted into
research_leads.csv as real leads with a prediction behind them, the rest dismissed with a stated reason in data/breaks_dismissed.csv. A detector nobody can silence turns into noise, and noise gets ignored wholesale.

On Spreeuw Fontein & Toornits Kraal (Spreeufontein No. 26), Cornelis Floris Johannes Meyer is the last owner recorded from 1841-04-15, and the next entry is Lodewyk Bothma from 1871~, 30 years later, with no person in common. No document records the handover at all.
What would settle it The Deeds Office transfer register for this farm between 1841 and 1871. A transfer names its predecessor in title, so one deed closes the whole gap.

“Klein Knoffels Fontein” is named as a neighbour 3 times and we hold no parcel for it
B3 unheld-farm · 3 neighbour entries
3 separate surveys in this model put Klein Knoffels Fontein on the boundary of ground we do hold (PAR-000002, PAR-000017). It has no parcel of its own here, so nothing is known about who held it or when, while it borders farms at the centre of the project.
What would settle it The Surveyor-General's farm index for the registration division will give it a farm number and a diagram; the cadastre pull in `data/fetch_cadastre.py` then places it on the map.

“Restant van Zeekoe Gat” is named as a neighbour 2 times and we hold no parcel for it
B3 unheld-farm · 2 neighbour entries
2 separate surveys in this model put Restant van Zeekoe Gat on the boundary of ground we do hold (PAR-000178, PAR-000179).
