The farm's own history, the grant, the original survey, sits on that page.

No. 169

This parcel has no matched survey polygon, so it cannot be drawn on the map. That is a gap in the cadastre match, not an absence from the record.

What the record holds, in order

  1. 1883 boundary change subdivision: from Middelwater

Research notes

Deducted from Middelwater per SG 1459/1883. Klein Vlei is also named as Middelwater's southern neighbour on the 1883 diagram [TO VERIFY which sense]. [29 Jul 2026, verification pass] DOC-0039 (the 1883 verso) lists NO Klein Vlei deduction from farm 169 (only 169/1 "part marked pink", 169/5 Vaste Water, 169/6 Avondrust), and the 1989 servitude map shows no Klein Vlei Gedeelte. The 1883 diagram's southern NEIGHBOUR sense is supported instead: the modern cadastre has farm No.182 "KLEIN VALIE" (6,297 ha) directly south-west of Middelwater. This parcel may not be a Middelwater portion at all - decision pending.

[1 Aug 2026] PORTION NUMBER DELIBERATELY LEFT BLANK. checks.py asks for one, and it cannot be supplied honestly: the cadastre names every portion of this farm identically, so the polygons cannot be told apart by name and there is no diagram here that says which portion this is. Guessing a number to satisfy a check would be exactly the invented precision 3 forbids. [TO VERIFY] from the farm's deduction table or the CSG diagram index.

[8 Aug 2026] THE 1883 FACE DECIDES IT: KLEIN VLEI IS A NEIGHBOUR, NOT A PORTION OF MIDDLEWATER. DOC-0001's bounded-by line reads "Bounded North by Remhoogte, South by Klein Vlei, East by Rondable & Klaarstroom, West by Remhoogte & Venterskloof" - Klein Vlei stands in a list of four neighbouring farms and in no other role on the sheet. The verso's deduction table has now been read in full and Klein Vlei is not in it; the entry that was mistaken for it is "the part marked pink", 169/1, survey record 1437/1883. The 1833 sheet (DOC-0038) names the same neighbour "Klein Valle" and puts it WEST where 1883 puts it SOUTH, which is what two hands make of a farm lying to the south-west; the modern cadastre's farm No. 182 "KLEIN VALIE" sits exactly there. So this parcel row is a Middelwater portion that never existed, and the blank portion number was blank because there was nothing to put in it. PENDING: merge this row into a neighbour row for Klein Valie No. 182, or retire it. Not done here because retiring a parcel touches ownership, neighbour and story links, and that is its own pass.

The research behind this page, kept separate from it: dated working notes, open questions, and what is not yet settled.

What the record is missing

Found by breaks.py reading the model against itself, not written by hand, each one is a shape of missing record, not a fault in the data. The whole set is on the questions page.
