This model records acquisitions far better than departures, and the chart is honest about which is which rather than filling the gap with a straight line.

Two peaks, and both are real. The 1830s and 1840s are Stretch's survey seasons and the quitrent conversion that followed, the district's paper being made. The 1890s to the 1930s are the subdivisions, the estates and the deaths of the generation that had been granted the ground. The thin stretch before 1800 is not a quiet century; it is the century this project has the least paper for.

The columns are the argument: a wool price in London and a transfer on Middelwater are the same story seen at two distances, and this project has spent a lot of pages saying so one farm at a time.
