This is a private family-history research project, published so that relatives and researchers can read it and correct it. It is not an official record of anything. By using the site you accept the terms below.

1. What this site is, and is not

It is one family's research into the farms of the Prince Albert and Klaarstroom district and the people recorded on them. It is assembled from archival documents, surveyor's diagrams, church registers, deeds and family memory, and it is a work in progress that changes as new documents arrive.

It is not a register, a title record, a genealogy of record, or a publication of the State, the Surveyor-General, the Deeds Office or any archive. Where a page disagrees with a published genealogy or with family tradition, that disagreement is deliberate and is argued from the sources cited on the page. It may still be wrong.

2. Accuracy, and how to read a claim

Every fact on this site is meant to carry its source, and where a statement is an inference rather than a finding the page is meant to say so, in words. Statements marked [TO VERIFY], probable, likely or [FAMILY] are exactly that and should not be repeated elsewhere as established fact.

Dates, spellings and identities in nineteenth-century records are frequently ambiguous. Afrikaans naming repeats hard: the same name can belong to several people in one generation, and this project matches people on name and date and place, never on a name alone. Do not assume that a person named here is your ancestor because the name matches.

3. The map is not a survey

This is the most important thing on this page. The farm outlines are drawn from the Western Cape Surveyor-General's cadastral data for illustration, and historic diagrams are placed approximately. They are shown to explain a history, not to establish a boundary.

Nothing on this site may be used to determine a boundary, an extent, an ownership, a servitude, a mineral right or any other real right, or relied on for any transaction, valuation, planning application or dispute. For any of those purposes the authorities are the approved diagram held by the Surveyor-General and the title deed held by the Deeds Office. Where this site and an official record disagree, the official record governs.

Ownership shown here is historical and is very often incomplete: a farm may have changed hands many times without a document this project has seen. An owner named on a page is an owner on record here, at the date given, and nothing more.

4. Personal information

This site is subject to the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA). Personal information is processed here for historical, genealogical and research purposes.

Living people are withheld from the public site. A person is published only where the record establishes that they are presumed deceased — a recorded death, a birth before 1936, a documented floruit, or a dated trace in the record itself. Where none of those exists, the person is withheld. The rule fails closed: no date means no page.
Deceased people are published, with the sources that record them. POPIA does not apply to the personal information of a deceased person, but their relatives may still have an interest in how they are described, and requests are welcome.
Sensitive material is not published at all. No DNA results, health information, financial detail or private correspondence about any living person appears on this site, from any source, in any form.
Documents naming current registered owners are withheld. Deeds searches and diagrams from the modern period are cited but not reproduced.

Your rights. If you are named on this site, or a relative of yours is, you may ask to see what is held, to have it corrected, or to have it removed. You do not have to give a reason. Ask, and it will be done — a family history that somebody has asked to be left out of is not worth having. A contact address for these requests has not been published yet - ask through whoever sent you this site, and it will reach the author.

5. Copyright and reuse

The prose, the analysis, the transcriptions and the compiled data on this site are the author's own work and are offered for non-commercial family and research use. Quote it, print it, send it to a relative, cite it in your own research. Please attribute it and link back, so a reader can check the sources.

Much of what you see here is not the author's to license. Archival scans, surveyor's diagrams, photographs and published local histories belong to the archives, authors and families that hold them. They appear here under the citation and fair-dealing provisions for research and private study, each with its source. If you want to reuse one of those, go to the holding institution, not to this site.

Do not scrape the site, republish it in bulk, or use its contents to train a model or to build a commercial genealogy product.

6. Data from others

Cadastral boundaries: Western Cape Surveyor-General (SG_PlanningCadastre), used for illustration.
Genealogical index references: FamilySearch and other named repositories, cited by their permanent identifiers rather than reproduced.

7. No warranty, and limits

The site is provided as it is, with no warranty of accuracy, completeness or fitness for any purpose. To the extent the law allows, the author is not liable for any loss arising from use of, or reliance on, anything published here. Nothing on this page limits any liability that cannot lawfully be limited.

8. Changes

These terms may change as the site does. The version and date at the top of this page say which set you are reading, and a material change will ask you to accept again.

9. Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of the Republic of South Africa.

A contact address for these requests has not been published yet - ask through whoever sent you this site, and it will reach the author. Corrections are the point of the site: if something here is wrong about your family, please say so and it will be fixed and credited.
