Research notes
[SRC-073] Eldest child of the root couple; born on a farm in the Graaff-Reinet district, baptised there 13 Aug 1809. Married Wynand van ZylH at Beaufort West 1 Feb 1829.
29 Jul 2026 FamilySearch GM42-9CH gives her death as 1884.
[1 Aug 2026, SRC-181 - Beaufort West baptisms 1838] Named as a mother - 'Johanna Jacomina Oosthuisen', wife of Wynand van ZylH - at the baptism of their son JACOBUS PETRUS at Beaufort West on 19 August 1838. Her sister Susanna Catharina and her brother-in-law Jacobus stood as witnesses. The two sisters' children were born thirteen days apart.
[1 Aug 2026, SRC-183 - his own death notice] HER SON'S DEATH NOTICE NAMES HER as 'Johanna Jacomina van Zyl, gebore Oosthuizen' and gives his birthplace as MIDDELWATER - so she and Wynand were on her father's farm in 1839, four years after their marriage. It also shows the family did NOT simply stay in the Koup: that son died in the Marico in 1895.
[SRC-294, Fred van Zyl, 6 Aug 2026] [FAMILY] HER MARRIED HOUSEHOLD WAS ON MIDDELWATER. Her son Jan Adriaan van Zyl was born on the farm on 9 November 1839, so she and Wynand van ZylH were living on PAR-000001 after their marriage - a van Zyl household on the Oosthuizen home farm, in the years between the 1833 survey and the 1841 grant. This model had the marriage (LEAD-0082 records the duplicate Wynand rows) and not the residence. [TO VERIFY - the baptism entry would state the farm]. See LEAD-0110.
These are working notes, not finished prose: they carry the reasoning, the corrections and the things still marked to verify. They are kept here so the page itself can read as what is known.
Open questions
-
Was a van Zyl household living on Middelwater in 1839, and was Jacobus Johannes on Vrolikheid in 1809?
priority 1 · LEAD-0110
Fred van Zyl states that his great-grandfather Jan Adriaan van Zyl was born on Middelwater on 9 November 1839, and that Ockert Jacobus OosthuizenL was born on Vrolikheid in 1809. Both would put named households on this project's core ground a generation earlier than its documents do.
What would settle it The two baptism entries. Each names the farm and the parents in the same line.
-
Brandfort: is the founder's farm Keerom documented, and when did Susanna Catharina die?
priority 2 · LEAD-0045
Published accounts have Brandfort laid out in 1866 on Jacobus van ZylM's farm Keerom, and one calls him 'a Voortrekker from Prins Albert'. What does the deed for Keerom say, and what became of his first wife Susanna Catharina OosthuizenL, born on this ground in 1811?
What would settle it A transfer deed for Keerom naming Jacobus Stephanus van ZylM, or a death notice for Susanna Catharina giving a date and a place.
