The spinning jenny, and the water frame and power loom behind it. It is the demand these machines create that makes wool worth growing eight thousand kilometres away - the merinos reach the Cape in 1789, wool is the district staple by 1850, and a million kilograms go through Meiringspoort in the 1870 season.
