    A twenty-seven-year-old British soldier from Beaufort West, buried where he fell, on a portion of Rietfontein. "Not gone from memory love / but gone to his father to rest above." The date is the headstone's; SRC-068's prose says 1901 in the same paragraph. See LEAD-0043.

Research notes

[SRC-068] British soldier, killed by lightning on LEMOENRIETFONTEIN, a portion of Rietfontein in the Zeekoegat district, and buried there under a marble headstone: "Not gone from memory love / but gone to his father to rest above." Born at Beaufort West, youngest child of Daniel Coghill (b. Scotland 20 Sep 1842, d. 1874) and Aletta Catharina de Bruto, daughter of Joao Soares de Bruto of Portugal, who was born at Victoria West on 12 Sep 1849, remarried Sebastian Frederick Fischer in 1877, had seven more children, and died at Prince Albert on 16 Sep 1908. DATE CONFLICT INSIDE THE SOURCE: the prose says 1901; the headstone it quotes in the same paragraph reads 15 February 1900. THE HEADSTONE IS TAKEN AS THE AUTHORITY, it is the primary object and the prose is a summary of it. See LEAD-0043.
