Research notes

DIRECT ANCESTOR - Frans's 2x-great-grandmother, and she was MISSING from the model until now. Married Ockert Almero OosthuizenL (PER-000005) at Prince Albert, 1 December 1863. The HITGE name that runs through the family - Almero Jacobus HITGE Oosthuizen, and the Hitge who was granted Wit Plaats in 1841 (PER-000044) - comes in through her. Tree confirms 11 Jun 1846 - 25 Jul 1933.

29 Jul 2026 [SRC-088] Named in full on the 1878 baptism as "Aletta Catharina Maria Helena HitgeH".

29 Jul 2026 [TREE]: her father is Charles Frederick HitgeL (PER-000327, b. Jul 1819 England, d. 29 JUL 1846 AT OORLOGS KLOOF, PAR-000066 - six weeks after her birth), son of Nicolaus HitgeM (PER-000328) and Mary Wright HuntM. See LEAD-0009.

29 Jul 2026 [TREE]: after her father died at Oorlogs Kloof (six weeks after her birth), her mother Sophia Johanna MockeM remarried J.D.J. OOSTHUIZEN of Middelwater (UNI-000040) - SHE GREW UP AS HIS STEPDAUGHTER ON MIDDELWATER, which explains the 1863 marriage to his nephew Ockert Almero: they were raised in one family orbit. Also why Oosthuizen-era portraits suspected to be her and her husband could surface on Middelwater/Klueplaas ground - the farm was her home twice over.

30 Jul 2026 [SRC-127/DOC-0087] Listed on her mother's death notice as 'Aletta Maria Helena Hitches' among the children of the deceased - the Mocke bridge (her place inside the Oosthuizen household) confirmed in a primary document. [30 Jul 2026, baptism register pp.910-911] Register writes her "Aletta Katharina Mary Helena" and the surname "Hitges"; born "1846 / 11 Juny", which matches the birth date already held. Baptised after her father's death (he died 29 Jul 1846); the baptism date itself is given by ditto marks and is not readable from the image [TO VERIFY]. Both grandmothers and both grandfathers witness. Her first name follows the vernoemingspatroon exactly - mother's mother Aletta Catharina RouxM (PER-000473), who is herself a witness.

[31 Jul 2026 SRC-171] Named in her son Charles Frederick's 1930 death notice as 'Aletta Catharina OosthuizenL (born Hitge), WIDOW, Prince Albert' - so she was still at Prince Albert eight years after her husband died and three years before her own death.

[5 Aug 2026, SRC-291/292] HER DEATH NOTICE SAYS WHERE SHE WAS BORN, AND IT IS WIT PLAATS. SRC-292, notice 386 of 1933, gives her geboorteplaats as 'WITPLAATS, Dist. Prins Albert' - PAR-000031, the portion of Vrolykheid granted to 'N. HitgeM' in 1841. Her father is named in full as CHARLES FREDERICK WRIGHT HITJE, which carries his own mother's name Wright (Mary Wright HuntM) as a middle name and ties the Uitenhage family to this ground by name as well as by place. Age at death 87 years 1 month against a death of 25 July 1933 back-computes to about June 1846, matching the 11 June 1846 already held. Her three children are named: Jan Adrian, Charles Frederick Wright (deceased by 1933) and Almero Jacobus Hitje Oosthuizen - the last of whom signed the notice as 'Seun van oorledene'.
