THE INDEX'S DATUM COLUMN IS THE BIRTH DATE, NOT THE BAPTISM, and that is worth knowing before the rest of this index is used. The index gives 9.9.1875; the register page gives 'Geboren 9 Sept' and 'Gedoopt 1 Feb' 1876. So a date lifted from the index is a birth. REGISTER ENTRY, columns Namen van Kinderen / Geboren / Gedoopt / Ouders / Getuigen: child 'Gert Jan Oosthuisen', marked 'buitengew:' (the register's own note, read as buitengewoon, an extraordinary or out-of-course baptism; the reading is probable and not certain); born 9 September, baptised 1 February; OUDERS 'Nicolaas James Marincowitz' and 'Catharina Maria Oosthuisen'; GETUIGEN 'Gert Adriaan Oosthuisen' and 'Catharina Adriana Janse van Vuuren'. THE TWO WITNESSES ARE THE CHILD'S MATERNAL GRANDPARENTS, both already held here as PER-000127 and PER-000605, and PER-000022 is recorded as their daughter. That is the Cape font pattern 5b describes, and it is the first baptism in this project where both witnesses resolve to people already in the model. The child carries his maternal grandfather's name in his given names while keeping the Marincowitz surname, which is why the family reads 'Oosthuizen' inside a Marincowitz name. The register writes Oosthuisen and Marincowitz; the house spellings stay Oosthuizen and Marincowitz per 5a-i, and the register's forms are kept here.
Kept verbatim. This project contradicts published genealogies and corrects a family's own oral tradition, so every claim has to be checkable by someone who was not in the room.
