Izaak Johannes van der Merwe (1808-1839)

[9 Aug 2026, SRC-347] A BROTHER OF A DIRECT ANCESTOR, and the reason this project can date the family's arrival in the Hantam. His death notice 3465 1/2, filed 21 June 1839, names him 'Izaak Johs. v.d. Merwe C. A. Zoon', born 'Tygerhoek in deze wijk, Hantam', son of 'Carel Aron v.d. Merwe', aged 30 years 11 months 26 days, a BOEREN ARBEID[ER], married to Sophia Maria Jacoba van der Merwe, died 11 May 1839 on the place 'Inkelde wilgeboom' in the Hantam, leaving four daughters all minors and, so far as the informant knew, no property at all. THE AGE PUTS HIS BIRTH ABOUT 16 MAY 1808, AT TYGERHOEK. His brother Schalk Willem (PER-001635) was born at Elsenbosch in the Piketberg district in February 1794. Between those two births the household crossed from the Boland into the Hantam, and that fourteen-year window is the tightest this record can currently draw. The identification of his father as PER-001639 rests on the name Carel Aaron, the ward, and the fact that PER-001635's son was born at the same Tygerhoek in 1813. 9 forbids matching on a name alone and this is not that, but it is an inference and not a record. [TO VERIFY] His widow and his four daughters are named on the notice and are transcribed there. They are not given rows here: they are descendants of an ancestor's brother, which scope rule R3 puts outside this project.
