THE FIRST NAMED LOAN PLACE THIS PROJECT HAS FOUND IN THE COUNCIL RESOLUTIONS, and it is held by a family already in scope. Verbatim: 'Johannes Jacobus Swanepoel geeft met allen Eerbied te Kennen hoe hy Suppl:t IN DEN JARE 1790 IN DE MAAND MAART van de E: Comp:e IN LEENING heeft verkreegen zeekere VEEPLAATS GENAAMD DE BRAKKE FONTEIN GEL: AGTER DE SWARTE BERG, dat hy Suppl:t niet zyn moge hem van de op dikgem: plaats ten agteren zynde Recognitie Penn: van een Jaar en Twee Maanden gratieuselyk te willen excuseeren, en dezelve by de ordonn: boeken te laten afschryven als meede dat dezelve voor VERLATEN mag bekend gesteld werden.' So: taken in loan from the Company in March 1790, fourteen months of recognitiegeld unpaid, and he is asking to be released from it and to give the place up. TWO THINGS ON THE PAPER WORTH KEEPING. He signed with a cross - 'x dit Kruysmerk heeft Johannes Joachim Zwanepoel zelfs gestelt' - and the clerk wrote JOACHIM there against JACOBUS in the body of the petition. Both spellings are recorded here per 5a note 6; neither is corrected. The surname appears as both Swanepoel and Zwanepoel in the one document. THE DISTRICT IS STATED AND IT IS NOT OURS ON ITS FACE: 'het Berigt van den Landdrost van GRAAF RYNET onder wiens district de Plaats in questie is leggende'. 'Agter de Swarte berg' means north of the Swartberg, which is the right side of the mountain for this project, but the Graaff-Reinet magistracy in 1792 reached a long way east. Brakke Fontein is also a common name. WHETHER THIS GROUND OR THIS MAN IS OURS IS LEAD-0181 AND IS NOT ASSERTED HERE.
