A MEMBERSHIP ROLL, WHICH IS A KIND OF RECORD THIS PROJECT HAS NOT USED BEFORE. Columns: Namen / Ouderdom / Wanneer en door wien aangenomen / voorgesteld / Attesten / Wanneer en waarheen vertrokken / Wanneer Overleden. It records not only who joined but WHERE THEY WENT and WHEN THEY DIED, which makes it a finding aid for people who leave the district. ENTRY 95: "FRANS JACOBUS WILHELMUS V. D. MERWE - S.W.B./3", ouderdom 16, aangenomen 12 JULY 1879 by Ds Scholtz. That is PER-000762, confirmed by the patronymic S.W.B. and by an age of 16 for a boy born 24 March 1863. HIS CONFIRMATION IS A NEW EVENT for him and the age corroborates the birth date a fourth time. ENTRY 94, immediately above: "Jacobus Alewyn van der Merwe - S.W.B. zoon", 17, admitted the same day. That is his elder brother, one of the twelve on their mother's 1882 death notice, confirmed here by the same patronymic. Two brothers admitted together. OTHERS ON THE PAGE THAT TOUCH THIS RECORD: 66 "Jacobus Gideon Nel Louw (J.A.z.Hzn)", 16; 70 "Jacobus Adriaan van der Merwe - Schalk 3/"; 73 "Izak Johannes van der Merwe (Jacob 3/)", who left for FRASERBURG in August 1880; 75 "Elizabeth Maria van der Merwe", who DIED 3 MEI 1879; 76 "Hester Jacoba van der Merwe", who went to GIBEON, SOUTH WEST AFRICA on 20/10/21; 92 "Johanna Jacoba Burger, S.W. dochter". None is identified here. THE PATRONYMIC HABIT IS WORTH NOTING ON ITS OWN. This register writes sons as "S.W.B./3" and "Schalk 3/" and "Jacob 3/" - a father's initials and a numeral - which is how a small congregation told a dozen van der Merwes apart. It is the same device the 1885 marriage register uses when it writes "S.W.B. zoon".
Kept verbatim. This project contradicts published genealogies and corrects a family's own oral tradition, so every claim has to be checkable by someone who was not in the room.
