VERBATIM CONTENT: name 'Nicholas Hitge'; birthplace 'Germany, [old Lein?ng]' - the second word is not confidently legible and is NOT guessed; parents 'Conrad Hitge' and 'Sarah Hitge'; age '63 years 5 months 27 days'; CONDITION IN LIFE 'SHOPKEEPER'; married; died 3 August 1848 'at his residence in Baird Street, Town of Uitenhage'; children 1 Conrad Anthony Hitge, 2 George Joseph Roy Hitge, 3 Louisa Sophia married to Ignatius Petrus Rademeyer, 4 Hester Adriana Caroline married to Jerolm Marincowitz, 5 Thomas William Nicholas Hitge 'a Minor'; 'has left moveable and immoveable property and has died TESTATE'; Uitenhage 10 August 1848, signed 'Mary Hitge, Surviving Spouse'. [5 Aug 2026, web search] THE ILLEGIBLE BIRTHPLACE WORD NOW HAS A SUPPORTED READING: 'old Lein[ingen]', that is ALT-LEININGEN in the Palatinate. Three independent things agree - the shape of the word on the notice, this model's own long-standing note on PER-000328 giving his birth as 'Palatinate (Germany)', and a published WikiTree profile which has him arriving at the Cape in 1808 from Alt-Leining, Germany. Recorded as a reading that is now supported rather than a guess; the transcription above is left as it was read. [TO VERIFY against the image at higher resolution]
