BOTH ARE REPORTED to place the Oosthuizen stamvader as JAN OOSTHUYSEN FROM WERDEN - that is, Werden on the Ruhr, today a district of ESSEN in Germany, not Woerden in Utrecht. Zoellner's framing is that the Thirty Years' War left the German states destitute and drew ex-soldiers west into Dutch service, and she lists him among the seventeenth-century German progenitors at the Cape. I HAVE NOT SEEN EITHER WORK MYSELF - this is cited from Frans's research note and the surrounding literature, and both should be read directly before the German origin is treated as settled.
