The citation as it was given

THE OLDEST ORIGINAL DOCUMENT IN THE PROJECT. Entry: "Den 22ste Dito - Jacobus, Zoon van JAN OOSTHUIJSEN en JANNETJE MARTENS. Getuijge SUSANNA GARDE." The surname is underlined on the page by a later archivist's hand. Under the heading Den 8ste Novemb: with 22ste Dito following, so 22 November 1722. A SINGLE witness, where the 1755 and 1786 baptisms in this family have two and seven - the network thickens as the family does. NOEMNAAM AGAIN: the register writes Jan and Jannetje; FamilySearch has the parents as Johannes Oosthuijsz and Johanna Martens. Same names, spoken form. The congregation is not printed on the page [TO VERIFY], but the surrounding entries are Jourdan, Marais, Du Preez, Rousseau, Joubert, Lombard, Potgieter, Van der Merwe, Terblanche - a Huguenot congregation, and the parents married at Drakenstein about 1702. DRAKENSTEIN is the expectation.

Kept verbatim. This project contradicts published genealogies and corrects a family's own oral tradition, so every claim has to be checkable by someone who was not in the room.
