Research notes
[FS, from FamilySearch profiles supplied by the family 3 Aug 2026] Married CHRISTINA MARIA MAGDALENA MINNIE at GRAAFF-REINET on 7 April 1828 - a Minie marrying a Minnie, which on the face of it is the same surname marrying itself. ONE HOUSEHOLD, FOUR SPELLINGS. This single family writes the surname as MINIE (the father), MINNIE (the mother), MIENIE (four of the children) and MINNIE again (one daughter). That is not four families, it is one clerk after another. It settles a question this project had left open only hours earlier - whether Mienie, Minnie, Minie and Minne could be merged - and the answer is that the SPELLING CARRIES NO INFORMATION AT ALL and must never be used to tell these people apart, or to argue that a farm called MINNIES KRAAL cannot be named for a family recorded as MINNE.
These are working notes, not finished prose: they carry the reasoning, the corrections and the things still marked to verify. They are kept here so the page itself can read as what is known.
