Janet Melville, who works from baptism registers and death notices, names her as his wife and gives her death as 1853. Elsje Johanna van der MerweL (PER-001630) is the second wife. SHE IS NAMED IN THE CALVINIA BAPTISM REGISTER AS THE MOTHER OF PER-000762, who was born in 1863, ten years after her death. That cannot be right as it stands and it is not resolved here by deleting either half. See LEAD-0152. No birth date, no parents, no marriage date. [TO VERIFY]

Verouderd — hieronder beantwoord [11 Aug 2026, SRC-378] THE READING THAT PUT HER IN THIS MODEL HAS NOW BEEN CHECKED AGAINST THE PAGE, AND IT FAILED. The 1863 Calvinia entry names Elsje Johanna v.d. Merwe as the mother and does not mention her anywhere. She is NOT the mother of PER-000762. THAT LEAVES HER OWN EXISTENCE RESTING ON LESS THAN IT LOOKED. The single thing that brought her into this record was Janet Melville's reading of this register, and the register does not say what she reported. A second doubt runs the same way: PER-001629 was born on 23 February 1833, so a wife who died in 1853 would have been married to him before he was 21. Possible, but nothing here supports it. SHE IS NOT DELETED. Melville gave a death year, 1853, which suggests she read it somewhere other than the entry she misreported, and a compiler working from death notices is not likely to have invented a woman outright. What is likely is that she belongs to a DIFFERENT Schalk Willem Burger van der MerweM - the name recurs in this family, and her report is keyed to number 70897 in a numbering this project cannot resolve. [11 Aug 2026, SRC-383] CONFIRMED, AND THE DOUBT RAISED AGAINST HER EARLIER TODAY WAS WRONG. The Hantam marriage register has the marriage: 13 January 1851, in the church at Hantam, district of Clanwilliam. He was 18 and of the Roggeveld, she was 17 and of the Hantam, and BOTH FATHERS CONSENTED BY NAME - J. A. van der Merwe for him, which is Jacobus Adriaan, PER-001631, and I. H. Visagie for her. Both signed the register themselves. SO SHE IS THE FIRST WIFE OF PER-001629 and Janet Melville was right about that. What Melville was wrong about is separate: she read this woman as the MOTHER of PER-000762, born ten years after her death, and the 1863 register (SRC-378) names Elsje Johanna van der MerweL there instead. LEAD-0160, which asked whether she belonged to this man at all, is closed answered YES. SHE DIED IN 1853, two years married and about nineteen, and left no children. Her parents were Izaak Heremias Visagie 1792-1867 and Johanna Sophia van der MerweM 1796-1872 (SRC-386); her youngest sister Helena Janetta Elizabeth stood as a witness at his son's baptism in 1863.
