Navorsingsnotas
[TREE] Added 2026-07-31 by kin_sweep.py under the one-degree rule: spouse of Johanna Jacomina OosthuizenH. Thin record, name, dates and the family link only. NO PLACE IMPORTED: the tree's place strings are systematically wrong and are not evidence.
[1 Aug 2026, SRC-179 - handwritten van Zyl family history, page 2] The sheet says Wynand and Jacobus were TWINS, both born 6/12/1809. This row carries 1808. One of the two is wrong and it is not settled here. See LEAD-0048. (PER-001263 and PER-001264 are also probably each other's duplicate - two Wynands, both 1808, both recorded as spouse of Johanna Jacomina OosthuizenH.)
[1 Aug 2026, SRC-180 - the baptism register] The register gives Wijnand van Zijl born 3 June 1808 - which is PER-001264's date to the day. This row carries a bare 1808 and a death in 1870. PROBABLE DUPLICATE OF PER-001264, not merged yet because the 1870 death date exists only here and would be lost. NOT twins with Jacobus; that claim is disproved.
[FS, 1 Aug 2026] GJB6-H9Z, 1808-1870, and FamilySearch lists him as Casper van ZylM's son and Jacobus's brother - so THIS is the good Wynand row. Birth date refined to 3 JUNE 1808 from the baptism register (SRC-180), which agrees with FS's 1808 and adds the day. PER-001264 (FS GW6V-FT8) carries the same birth date and no death and is very probably an unmerged FamilySearch duplicate of this man; NOT merged here because the two ids are distinct on FS and that is a decision for FamilySearch, not for this model.
[1 Aug 2026, SRC-183 - his own death notice] Named as the father on his son Jan Adriaan's death notice - 'Wijnand van Zijl' - with the son's birthplace given as MIDDELWATER, C.C. First documentary evidence of this van Zyl household living on the Oosthuizen farm.
[4 Aug 2026] PROBABLE DUPLICATE OF PER-001264, and the duplication is in the PRIVATE TREE, not introduced here: both rows carry the same name and the same birth date (3 June 1808) and both are recorded as spouse of Johanna Jacomina OosthuizenH (PER-000122), the root couple's eldest daughter - but they hold DIFFERENT family-tree ids ( /) and DIFFERENT FamilySearch ids (GJB6-H9Z / GW6V-FT8). NOT MERGED HERE: deciding which FamilySearch id is the right one is a FamilySearch question, and 10 says report rather than silently correct. WHAT IT COSTS WHILE IT STANDS: witness and deed matching refuses to link either row, because one real person plus an undetected twin reads as ambiguity - so this duplicate is actively withholding connections. [TO VERIFY]
[14 Aug 2026] MERGED PER-001264 into this row. One person duplicated in the private tree: the same wife, Johanna Jacomina OosthuizenH, and the same 1808 birth - one row giving the day and place (3 June 1808, Oudtshoorn) and the other the parents and the 1870 death. The survivor is the row this model has built on: father of seventeen children here and named in two stories. Moved across: given=Wynand. DISAGREEMENTS, kept rather than resolved - the FamilySearch id settles these in one click: display_name: kept 'Wynand van ZylH', PER-001264 said 'Wynand Van Zyl'; surname: kept 'van Zyl', PER-001264 said 'Van Zyl'; tree id: kept '', PER-001264 said ''; familysearch_id: kept 'GJB6-H9Z', PER-001264 said 'GW6V-FT8'. Retired ids kept for the trail: tree, FamilySearch GW6V-FT8 - a merged FamilySearch id still resolves, so it remains a usable door.
These are working notes, not finished prose: they carry the reasoning, the corrections and the things still marked to verify. They are kept here so the page itself can read as what is known.

Was a van Zyl household living on Middelwater in 1839, and was Jacobus Johannes on Vrolikheid in 1809?
prioriteit 1 · LEAD-0110
Fred van Zyl states that his great-grandfather Jan Adriaan van Zyl was born on Middelwater on 9 November 1839, and that Ockert Jacobus OosthuizenL was born on Vrolikheid in 1809. Both would put named households on this project's core ground a generation earlier than its documents do.
Wat dit sou uitmaak The two baptism entries. Each names the farm and the parents in the same line.
-
Brandfort: is the founder's farm Keerom documented, and when did Susanna Catharina die?
prioriteit 2 · LEAD-0045
Published accounts have Brandfort laid out in 1866 on Jacobus van ZylM's farm Keerom, and one calls him 'a Voortrekker from Prins Albert'. What does the deed for Keerom say, and what became of his first wife Susanna Catharina OosthuizenL, born on this ground in 1811?
Wat dit sou uitmaak A transfer deed for Keerom naming Jacobus Stephanus van ZylM, or a death notice for Susanna Catharina giving a date and a place.
-
Were Jacobus and Wynand van Zyl twins, born 6 December 1809?
prioriteit 2 · LEAD-0048
The van Zyl family history says Jacobus and Wynand were TWINS, both born 6/12/1809. The model has Jacobus at 20 Sep 1809 and Wynand at 1808. Which is right?
Wat dit sou uitmaak A baptism entry for either brother giving a date, or both on one day.
