Die van der Merwes trek suid na die Prins Albert-distrik

omstreeks 1950 · family · Prince Albert

The maternal line does NOT come out of the Prince Albert district. Three generations sit in the northern Karoo - Van Wyksvlei (b.1891), Bokvlakte (b.1900), Calvinia (m.1917), Williston (b.1928, m.1949). It is Frans Jacobus Wilhelmus van der Merwe and Maria Magritha van Rensburg who move south to VREDENDAL, part of Spreeufontein No. 26, in about the 1950s - where their daughter Catharina, Frans's mother, grew up and where their son Deon farms today. So the two halves of this family reach the same ground from opposite ends of the Karoo, roughly a century apart: the Oosthuizens from the east and south by 1841, the van der Merwes from the north-west by about 1950. Approximate date [TO VERIFY] - the deeds for Vredendal would date the arrival exactly.
