TRANSCRIPTION. "Mei 22de - 407. Het Kind Elsje Johanna, geb Maart 28 1887. Vader Frans Jacobus Wilhelmus van der Merwe. Moeder Christina Elizabeth Nel. Getuigen: Schalk Willem Burger van der Merwe, Maria Margaretha Visagie, Jacobus Johannes Gideon Nel, Anna Jacoba van Wyk." A DAUGHTER THIS MODEL DID NOT HOLD. Jacobus Johannes Gideon (PER-000219), born 1888, was the only child of this marriage in the record until now. THE NAME IS THE PATTERN WORKING. Elsje Johanna is her father's mother (PER-001630). Two years later the son is christened JACOBUS JOHANNES GIDEON, and Jacobus Johannes Gideon Nel stands at this font - the mother's father, or a close kinsman of his. So the son's name, which this project has carried for a year without knowing where it came from, comes off the Nel side. THE WITNESSES ARE THE TWO GRANDFATHERS AND TWO WOMEN. Schalk Willem Burger van der Merwe is PER-001629, the child's paternal grandfather, standing at his granddaughter's baptism at 54. MARIA MARGARETHA VISAGIE, paired with him in the list, is not identified and is worth attention: a Visagie woman standing beside Schalk Willem Burger in 1887, five years after his wife died, is either a second wife or another of the collateral Visagies who appear right across this family (see SRC-378). It does NOT revive the Anna Maria Visagie reading, which the 1863 register has already disposed of. LEAD-0158. On the same opening, entry 409 carries a witness "Carel Aron van der Merwe J.J. zoon", an adult of that name in 1887; PER-001639, the Carel Aaron this line descends from, died in 1850. A later namesake, not him.

Woordeliks gehou. Hierdie projek weerspreek gepubliseerde genealogieë en stel 'n familie se eie mondelinge oorlewering reg, so elke bewering moet nagegaan kan word deur iemand wat nie in die vertrek was nie.
