TRANSCRIPTION. Entry 17, 15 June 1885. BRIDEGROOM "Frans Jacobus Wilhelmus van der Merwe S.W.B. zoon", age 22, jongman, beroep Boer, WOONPLAATS MATJESFONTEIN. BRIDE "Christina Elizabeth Nel", age 18, jonge dochter, of BRANDVLEI. Married in the school building at Brandvlei by W. ROBERTSON, na geboden, with consent van ouders. Witnesses S.W.B. VAN DER MERWE and J.P. LEMMER. "S.W.B. ZOON" IS THE PATRONYMIC AND IT SETTLES THE FILIATION INDEPENDENTLY of the baptism register: he is the son of Schalk Willem Burger. His father then signs as a witness to the marriage. THE RESIDENCE IS THE FIND. At 22 he was still living on MATJESFONTEIN, the farm the 1956 death notice gives as his birthplace, and he married out of it into Brandvlei. By 1897 he was on Oude Muur. That is a residence sequence, not a single ambiguous place name, and it bears on LEAD-0151. Note the register's spelling MATJESFONTEIN, one J. AGE 22 in June 1885 agrees with a birth on 24 March 1863. AGE 18 for the bride implies a birth in 1866 or 1867; this model holds 1868 for her, on the compiled tree's word, which would make her 17. The register is the older and better witness but a stated age is not a birth date. [TO VERIFY]
