THE DOCUMENT THAT TIES THE 1775 SNEEUWBERG ROLL TO A NAMED FAMILY. Opening line verbatim: 'Ana Boota wedewe van JAN OOSTHUIJSE DE OUDE ik heb mijn goed alle met regt late opschrijve van twee gloofbaare mensche'. Then: 'veijftig beeste, drie hondert in agttien schape, een half sleet waagen' and a short list of household iron and tin. Signed 'O:C: Ker: Olivier' and 'Het is de hant teijken van CORNELIS BESUIJDEHOUT +'. One debt: 65 Rd:s 2 to the bode Waldpot for shop goods delivered on behalf of the burgher Jan Abel Bek. Dated 'Ano 1780 den leeste Maart'. FOUR THINGS TIE IT TO SRC-423's ROLL OF 1775, and the fourth is the one that is hard to explain away. (1) The epithet: the roll says 'Jan Oosthuijsen d'oude', this says 'Jan Oosthuijse de oude' - the same man distinguished the same way five years apart. (2) The wife: ANA BOOTA is ANNA BOTHA, who is the recorded wife of Jan Hendrik Oosthuizen (b.1714) in the private tree. (3) The date: that tree gives him 'died before 31 March 1780', which is this inventory's date - though note this is NOT independent, since the tree's bound was almost certainly derived from this very record. (4) THE WITNESS: CORNELIS BESUIJDENHOUT signs here, and the 1775 roll lists 'Cornelis Besuijdenhout wijnandsz' IMMEDIATELY BEFORE the two Jan Oosthuijsens. Neighbours on a frontier roll, and one attests the other's estate five years later. AND THE ESTATE ITSELF ARGUES FOR THE FRONTIER. No opstal, no loan place named, no slaves, no cash - fifty cattle, 318 sheep and a half-worn wagon. That is a trekboer's estate, not the estate of a Paarl landowner, which is what the tree's place strings would otherwise suggest. 5 says treat a place string as hostile; this is the kind of evidence that outweighs one. See LEAD-0182.
