A BURGER FAMILY HOLDING TYGERHOEK IN 1782, forty-one years before the widow of William Petrus Burger is measured for it. 49.25a lists among the assets "een opstal staande op de leeningsplaats gen:t de TIJGERHOEK, geleegen over d' Oliphants en Doorn Rivieren" at Rd:s 200, and 49.25b, the widow's own list, has "1 opstal genoemt de Tijgerhoek ... gelegen aan de HANTAM". THE ESTATE: Schalk Willem Burger, landbouwer, died ab intestato before 24 September 1782, leaving his wife HESTER SMITH and ELEVEN children - 1) Hester Helena, married Nicolaas Jansz VAN RENSBURG; 2) Barend Jacobus; 3) Schalk Willem; 4) Elsje, married Johannes Hendrik LUBBE; 5) ALEWIJN JOHANNES; 6) Andries Petrus; 7) Anna Sophia, married Schalk Willem Voster; 8) Johanna Adriana, married Frans LUBBE; 9) Jacobus Stephanus aged 22; 10) Martje Dorothea aged 17; 11) Willem Burger aged 14. Other opstallen: de Halve Dorschvloer at the Olifants River with the annexed loan farm Misgund (Rd:s 1500), de Twee Fonteijnen in the Koude Bokkeveld, de Breede Rivier at the Olifants Bergh, and de Careerivier. Twelve male slaves, four women, six boys, four girls; 3002 sheep, 253 cattle, 48 trek oxen, 200 goats. WHY IT MATTERS TO THIS LINE, and it is three things at once. The name SCHALK WILLEM BURGER is carried by PER-001629, Schalk Willem BURGER van der Merwe (1833-1904). Two of this man's daughters married LUBBES, and this model already holds Anna Magdalena LUBBE (PER-001632) whose parents are Frans Jacobus Lubbe and HESTER JOHANNA BURGER (PER-001638, 1792-1852) - the woman the 1833 child is named for. And a son is called ALEWIJN JOHANNES, in a district that has two farms called Alewyns Berg. NONE OF THAT IS PROVEN. It is a name, a farm and a pattern of marriages pointing the same way, which is a great deal more than a surname and a great deal less than a descent. [TO VERIFY] LEAD-0149.
