HELD AS A PHOTOGRAPH OF THE REGISTER, not as a file fetched from the archive, and the collection title came with it. The entry: 'Den 15 dito - CORNELIS CLAASZ van [illegible] VRIJBORGER en CATARINA VAN MALBAAR.' A word after 'vrijborger' is STRUCK THROUGH on the page and is not read here; the place of origin after 'van' is not legible on this image either. Per 5a note 5 neither is guessed. WHY IT MATTERS: it turns the load-bearing date of this descent from secondary into primary. SRC-295, a wine-history article, gives 15 March 1676 as the marriage and says Catharina was manumitted before it; the register now carries the marriage itself. WHAT IT DOES AND DOES NOT PROVE: it proves the date and that the groom was a vrijburger. IT DOES NOT RECORD A MANUMISSION. That a person had to be free to marry at the Cape is the reasoning that connects the two, and it is reasoning, not this document - 5a note 5, an inference is not a finding. The manumission act itself is still worth ordering. AGAINST IT SITS SRC-297, the baptism of the daughter CORNELIA on 18 November 1674, sixteen months earlier. [TO VERIFY] the archive reference: the collection is named but no ark, film or image number has been seen - 5a-ii.
