THREE ACCOUNTS, CONSULTED 1 Aug 2026, and they do not agree on everything. All three have Brandfort laid out in 1866 on the farm KEEROM belonging to a Voortrekker named JACOBUS VAN ZYL; 47 stands sold in 1866; proclaimed a town 1874/1875; municipality 1884; named for President J.H. Brand. WHERE THEY DIFFER: one says he came from PRINS ALBERT, another that he came from NATAL after Piet Retief's murder - which are compatible, not contradictory, if he trekked from the Karoo and was in Natal in Feb 1838. One offers an alternative name origin, a Voortrekker fort at Keeromkoppie burnt in a Basotho attack. TERTIARY - encyclopaedic and popular sources, not a deed or a register. Good enough to establish that the claim is published and independent of Fred van Zyl; NOT good enough to date anything to the day. See LEAD-0045.
Woordeliks gehou. Hierdie projek weerspreek gepubliseerde genealogieë en stel 'n familie se eie mondelinge oorlewering reg, so elke bewering moet nagegaan kan word deur iemand wat nie in die vertrek was nie.
