MEIRINGSPOORT built 1854-1858 - 16 km, 223 working days, crossing the Groot River 21 times - by Andrew Geddes Bain, Stretch's road-building partner of 1829-32. Its NORTHERN MOUTH IS KLAARSTROOM, the anchor this project adopted on 31 Jul 2026. THE SWARTBERG PASS was commissioned to A.G. Bain's son THOMAS BAIN in 1879; construction began FROM THE PRINCE ALBERT SIDE in 1881, stalled when the contractor went insolvent, was taken over by Bain himself in Nov 1883, and opened 10 January 1888 - the last of his seventeen Cape passes.
