Navorsingsnotas
[FS 99RG-WFT] THE WOMAN ON THE 1886 STONE AT VREDENDAL, GRV-0025. 'Hier rust het lijk van ENGELA SUSARA NIEHAUS geb BOTES, overleden op den 24 July 1886, met den ouderdom van 49 jaar 2 maanden en 22 dagen', with Revelation 14:13 below. The age counts back to a birth about 2 MAY 1837 and FamilySearch gives her as 1837-1886, which agrees. She married HENDRIK WILLEM STORM NIEHAUS at PRINCE ALBERT on 8 OCTOBER 1855 and they had FIFTEEN CHILDREN between 1856 and 1880. He outlived her by twenty-four years and remarried at Aberdeen in 1888. [FAMILY] HER MOTHER WAS A STORM, per Frans. That is the join this project had been circling: the Storms, the Botes, the Niehaus and the Botma are one connected group across these farms, not four separate surnames. [TO VERIFY] against a baptism or her own death notice. SHE DIED ON VREDENDAL WHEN IT WAS STILL PART OF SPREEUWFONTEIN. The farm name in 1886 was Spreeufontein No. 26; Vredendal is the werf name it carries now.
[7 Aug 2026, FS 99RG-WFT] HER PARENTS ARE NOW KNOWN: Andries Stephanus BotesL [K4PY-V4B], 1797-1872, and Anna Magdalena PieterseM [LC3M-HN3]. Her father is one of the fifteen children of Jacobus Abraham BotesL and Elsje Dorothea GouwsM, so THE LINE FROM ENKHUIZEN TO THIS STONE IS NOW UNBROKEN: Wietse Botes of Enkhuizen, at the Cape 1744; Jacobus Abraham 1768; Andries Stephanus 1797; Engela Susara 1837, the Vredendal stone; Engela Susara Niehaus 1860; Engela Susarah 1881. FIVE GENERATIONS CARRYING THE ONE NAME.
These are working notes, not finished prose: they carry the reasoning, the corrections and the things still marked to verify. They are kept here so the page itself can read as what is known.

Read the graves ACROSS the farms, and against the online grave indexes
prioriteit 1 · LEAD-0127
Storm, Botes, Niehaus, Botma, Beukes and Freysen appear on stones on Varsche Fontein and on Vredendal/Spreeufontein, and they intermarry. What does the picture look like when the burial grounds are read as one body of evidence rather than farm by farm, and what do the published grave indexes add?
Wat dit sou uitmaak Nothing settles a question this shape. What it produces is a map: which families are buried where, who married whom, and which farms they moved between.
